Enlarged Pores
Enlarged pores are depressions in the facial skin surface that contain one or more openings to the ducts carrying sweat and oil from their respective eccrine glands and sebaceous glands.
Why do pores become enlarged?
Tiny hairs cover a person’s skin, except on the palms of the hands and on the feet. Each hair follicle has a pore at the top of it.
The hair follicle has a gland inside it that produces oil. This gland is called the sebaceous gland. When the sebaceous gland releases oil, the oil rises to the top of the skin and collects in the pore.
The main causes of enlarged pores are:
Excessive sebum: This is when a person’s sebaceous gland produces a lot of oil, leading to oily skin.
Decreased elasticity around the pore: This is when the skin becomes less supple.
Increased hair follicle volume: This is when the pore at the end of the hair follicle becomes clogged.
Sun damage - The sun may feel nice on your face, but its rays can be harming your skin invisibly. Specifically, UVA rays cause sun damage and break down the collagen in your skin, making it less elastic. When your skin lacks elasticity, your skin can sag and make your pores look more noticeable.
Noncomedogenic makeup
When oil collects in the pore and combines with dirt or makeup, the pore can become blocked. This blockage stretches the pore, making it look bigger. If the pore remains clogged, a pimple may develop. Although you can’t change the size of your pores, home techniques can help minimize their appearance.
Do’s
Use clay masks. These are usually made from real clay such as kaolin and are really good at degunking your skin and helping clear pores to prevent congestion and breakouts. They’re super easy to use: pop them on for a few minutes, then wash them away with some warm water. You can use a clay mask once to twice a week.
Use Retinoids (with care!). This ingredient is ace at encouraging your skin to produce more collagen, making your complexion look really plump and juicy. When skin is plumped, it stretches out slightly and therefore makes your pores look more noticeable. Be careful with products that feature this ingredient though; it can be pretty intense and when used too often, can cause your skin to flake or become inflamed. This ingredient also sensitizes skin with sun exposure, so it is best to use it at night.
Try products with alpha-hydroxy acids. AHAs are an umbrella term for ingredients such as glycolic, malic, and lactic acid. These can exfoliate the top layer of your skin, making it look smoother. A professional chemical peel is a stronger version of this, and can just feature AHAs, or with BHAs (this means beta hydroxy acid, which is technically salicylic acid).

Fractional laser treatments are also a great way to address pore size, however, this should only be administered by a professional and only after a consultation with a dermatologist.
Use a primer under your make-up - Dermalogica HydraBlur Primer - As well as working in tightening the pores, this primer will even the surface of the skin and offer a dramatic blurring effect, reducing the appearance of pores and other blemishes and leaving your skin looking flawless.

HydraFacial
It's simply the best treatment for healthier, clearer, and more hydrated skin, and it's perfect for all skin types. If you have oversized, stretched-out pores, this is the only treatment that will clear them out and shrink them.
This treatment has so many benefits for your skin, and one of them is that it helps to shrink your pores! We all get dirt, sebum, and other gunk stuck in the pores of our face. If we don't do anything to clear the gunk out, more and more will collect. Eventually, your pores have to stretch to accommodate the gunk, leaving your skin dotted with oversized, oily pores. But, shrinking those stretched pores is easy!
The first step of HydraFacial is massage-based to help improve the natural circulation of the lymphatic system. This helps to increase blood flow and oxygen levels in the skin which may relieve the tightness often experienced with rosacea. By also encouraging the fast removal of toxins and waste through the lymphatic system, it may reduce the development of bumps and spots.
The other stages of HydraFacial, like the cleansing and exfoliating stage, work to remove dead skin cells and promote overall stronger skin health which always makes your complexion look brighter.
As certain exfoliants can irritate rosacea, and worsen redness, this step is a very gentle process that contains natural botanical extracts and ingredients to nourish the skin. Some of these ingredients used are:
Lactic acid – an alpha hydroxy acid specifically used to treat hyperpigmentation and uneven complexion
Glucosamine – for regenerating skin cells, improving hydration, and inhibiting the development of red pigmentation
Antioxidants – to repair, and reduce inflammation, of the skin as well as fine lines and wrinkles
During stages 3, 4, and 5, you can expect your skin to be deeply clarified and all the impurities removed. Then your skin will be rehydrated and flooded with essential brightening agents, more antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic acid to leave your skin feeling rejuvenated and glowing.
Once the treatment removes the blackheads and dirt from your pores, they can regress to their natural size. While this won't happen immediately, consistently extracting the gunk from your pores will eventually help your pores shrink back to their natural size
In the final stage of HydraFacial, a hand-led, infrared light device is passed across the skin which has large benefits in pigmentation correction. The light energy targets and accelerates the repair of broken blood vessels.
