Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people at some point. It causes spots, oily skin
and sometimes skin that's hot or painful to touch.

Types of Spots

  • There are 6 main types of spots caused by acne:

    • blackheads – small black or yellowish bumps that develop on the skin; they're not filled with dirt but are black because the inner lining of the hair follicle produces colour

    • whiteheads – have a similar appearance to blackheads, but may be firmer and will not empty when squeezed

    • papules – small red bumps that may feel tender or sore

    • pustules – similar to papules, but have a white tip in the centre, caused by a build-up of pus

    • nodules – large hard lumps that build up beneath the surface of the skin and can be painful

    • cysts – the most severe type of spot caused by acne; they're large pus-filled lumps that look similar to boils and carry the greatest risk of causing permanent scarring

Common Causes

  • Acne is most commonly linked to the changes in hormone levels during puberty, but can start at any age.

  • Certain hormones cause the grease-producing glands next to hair follicles in the skin to produce larger amounts of oil (abnormal sebum).

  • This abnormal sebum changes the activity of a usually harmless skin bacterium called P. acnes, which becomes more aggressive and causes inflammation and pus.

  • The hormones also thicken the inner lining of the hair follicle, causing blockage of the pores. Cleaning the skin does not help to remove this blockage.

Don’t

  1. Do not wash affected areas of skin more than twice a day. Frequent washing can irritate the skin and make symptoms worse.

  2. Wash the affected area with a mild soap or cleanser and lukewarm water. Very hot or cold water can make acne worse.

  3. Do not try to "clean out" blackheads or squeeze spots. This can make them worse and cause permanent scarring.

  4. Avoid using too much make-up and cosmetics.

  5. Avoid make-up, skincare, and suncare products that are oil-based (sometimes labeled “comedogenic”). Use water-based non-comedogenic products, as they’re less likely to block the pores in your skin.

  6. Completely remove make-up before going to bed.

  7. If dry skin is a problem, use a fragrance-free water-based emollient.

  8. Regular exercise cannot improve your acne, but it can boost your mood and improve your self-esteem. Shower as soon as possible once you finish exercising as sweat can irritate your acne.

  9. Wash your hair regularly and try to avoid letting your hair fall across your face.

Do

  1. Focus on the spot treatment and balancing the skin, as well as making sure your other skincare needs are met.

  2. Avoid “picking” or “squeezing” breakouts at home, which can result in more breakouts, scarring, or redness. Instead, see a professional skin therapist for an extraction.

  3. Adult skin can lose its ability to retain moisture with age. Avoid over-drying skin by choosing products that contain less drying ingredients such as Salicylic Acid or Glycolic Acid to help remove dead skin cells, excess oil, and dirt, as well as Thymol and Terpineol to control bacteria.

  4. If you’re combatting signs of skin aging, look for ingredients such as Niacinamide and Hexylresorcinol to help balance uneven skin tone. Retinol – a wrinkle-smoothing ingredient – can also help reduce the appearance of premature aging.

HydraFacial for Acne

HydraFacial is an acne treatment that can offer a clearer and smoother complexion and is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin.

HydraFacial targets dead skin cells that can mix with sebum to produce an inflamed blemish. The treatment also works to reduce p. acne bacteria from the skin and clear clogged pores to address active acne and prevent future prevents.

Additionally, it’s able to break up hyperpigmentation and smooth scars that are left once a pimple has healed.

The end result is smoother skin, a clearer complexion, fewer breakouts, and smaller, less noticeable pores.

HydraFacial helps rosacea because it uses massage techniques, and vortex fusion technology and contains skin-renewing ingredients that help to soothe inflamed, red skin and correct uneven pigmentation.

The first step of HydraFacial is massage-based to help improve the natural circulation of the lymphatic system. This helps to increase blood flow and oxygen levels in the skin which may relieve the tightness often experienced with rosacea. By also encouraging the fast removal of toxins and waste through the lymphatic system, it may reduce the development of bumps and spots experienced alongside chronic redness.

The other stages of HydraFacial, like the cleansing and exfoliating stage, work to remove dead skin cells and promote overall stronger skin health which always makes your complexion look brighter.

As certain exfoliants can irritate rosacea, and worsen redness, this step is a very gentle process that contains natural botanical extracts and ingredients to nourish the skin. Some of these ingredients used are:

  • Lactic acid – an alpha hydroxy acid specifically used to treat hyperpigmentation and uneven complexion

  • Glucosamine – for regenerating skin cells, improving hydration, and inhibiting the development of red pigmentation

  • Antioxidants – to repair, and reduce inflammation, of the skin as well as fine lines and wrinkles

During stages 3, 4, and 5, you can expect your skin to be deeply clarified and all the impurities removed. Then your skin will be rehydrated and flooded with essential brightening agents, more antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic acid to leave your skin feeling rejuvenated and glowing.

These steps help to reduce the appearance of rosacea, as they work to restore the pores to their normal size – which can improve the appearance of visible blood vessels. HydraFacial’s gentle skin resurfacing properties also help fade away the redness.

In the final stage of HydraFacial, a hand-led, infrared light device is passed across the skin which has large benefits in pigmentation correction. The light energy targets and accelerates the repair of broken blood vessels and helps to prevent excessive flushing which are prominent symptoms of rosacea.

Other Treatments To Consider

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Simply put, a PRP facial uses your own blood’s platelets and plasma on your face. The natural chemicals in your own PRP are slathered onto your face and then micro-needled into the skin during a short procedure. Once the plasma is in, it begins to do its work of rejuvenating your entire face, tightening wrinkled areas, and smoothing the overall look. It’s able to do that because PRP’s essential chemical components stimulate collagen growth.

Some people opt to have just one facial while others undergo a regular series of procedures. The more often you have a PRP facial, the longer the results of each treatment will last, which is about three to six months.

Ideal for ideal for: acne scarring, sun damage, dull skin tone, fine lines & wrinkles, crows feet and dark circles.

By injecting platelet-rich plasma into your face, you can promote cell growth and healing. This healing process allows the skin on your face to feel my hydrated, plumper and younger. Plasma and platelets can be seen as the foundation of great skin.

By increasing the number of platelets in the areas of your face that have been damaged by the sun, scarred by acne, or losing elasticity, you can add a boost to your skin cells so these areas will naturally heal on their own.
